What is Lutein?
Lutein (Macular pigment, Xanthophyll) is concentrated in the retina and is responsible for three-colour vision. An important eye nutrient which may reduce the risk of eye disorders. One of the main components of green vegetables, orange fruits, and egg yolks is lutein, which is found in these foods in its free, non-esterified form.
Lutein typically exists in marigold flowers as lutein fatty acid esters. The flower petals of marigolds are the most significant source (more than 20 times higher amount), where lutein is chemically bound to different types of fatty acids like lauric, myristic, and palmitic acids.
Role of Lutein in Eye Health
Lutein, an isomeric form of zeaxanthin, and the preliminary epidemiological evidence state that increasing lutein and zeaxanthin intake lowers the risk of cataract development. Both are natural carotenoids. Humans cannot synthesise lutein, so they can acquire it solely by consuming dietary supplements. A dietary supplement formulation containing lutein may reduce the progression of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and promote overall eye health which is the leading cause of blindness and vision impairment.
Mechanism Of Action
Lutein and zeaxanthin are concentrated in high amounts in the synaptosomal membranes of the outer plexiform layer, which connects the brain and retinal tissues.
Although the function of these xanthophylls in filtering blue light is the most well-known, it also effectively protects the area of neuronal synapses in the retina and brain tissues, guards lens protein, lipid, and DNA from oxidative damage, and improves intracellular redox status in response to oxidative stress.
It may carry out a variety of functions, including obstructing potentially harmful blue and ultraviolet light and reducing the risk of senile cataract by avoiding oxidative lens damage.
